During Spring Racing Carnival Week, Oaks Day is also known as Ladies Day. It’s become a day for the ladies to go to the races. There are races that focus on fillies and mares and one that is just for the greys, because we women have a thing about grey horses. My 93-year-old mother-in-law, myself and my 6-year-old grand-daughter all will tip a grey if there is one in a race. It’s a much harder call in a race where they are all grey!
Anyway, as Ladies Day, the fashions on the day tend to be a little more on the girlie side. Things like lace, florals, pastels and all fabrics floaty are in abundance. Nude colours have been big for the past two years. This year I’m thinking sweet pastels and all things floral are going to the must have look of the day.
Pastels: As 2012 has been a big year for pastels, think Louis Vuitton and Chanel, I expect this palette to have a major impact on Oaks Day. Mint green and the palest yellows are expected to be seen on the lawn and in many marquees. Even hats will be in lady like sweet colours and styles. The good news is you can wear last years nude heels with this look and still be right on trend.
Florals: Another big trend for Spring that lends itself perfectly to Oaks Day would be florals. Really, does it get more girlie than this? Flowers in your hair on your dress or even your shoes. Graphic florals, vintage florals it doesn’t matter as long as there are enough flowers to create a lovely bouquet.
What I Would Be Wearing: I love this body conscious dress, the little kick of a ruffle at the hem, how the curve accentuates the waist and the knee-length. As the dress is modern in its style I would pair it up with a nice little pillbox style hat, veil a must and these floral closed toe pumps would finish the look off perfectly.
Do you think this it is lady like enough for Oaks Day? Would you do pastels or florals? Maybe a mix?
