As we continue our “An Affair to Remember” month, I thought it might be a good time to talk about how to wear pink polka dots if you aren’t a little girl. I don’t mean little in the sense of size, but age!
You may recall from my post about “How to wear pink without looking like Barbie”, that pink has been showing up in my wardrobe regularly of late and now, thanks to a great op shop find, I have more pink polka dots! So the trick becomes, how to pull off pink and polka dots without looking like I’m eight years old…or like I am trying to be eight years old!

Fun and Flirty Pink Polka Dots
Pink Polka Dots: The moment I saw this mini dress at my favourite op shop, I knew exactly how I would style it. Of course for me it is too short and the full baby-doll cut does nothing for my figure so I did a Tim Gunn and “made it work” by wearing it as a shirt and belting it! Thanks to Anne at Playing With Scarves, I opted to give the curls a bit of a wrap in a lovely scarf.
The extras: By adding the black leggings, black handbag and some black bangles I tried to keep the look from getting to “young” but I still wanted it to be flirty. Plus, it gave me a great opportunity to wear my hot pink wedges.
Fun Accessories: There is so much fun in the print that I had to continue the whimsy with my accessories, without being too princess I hope! A couple of black bracelets and the pink bracelet from my brights trio, plus my favourite silver bangle from Mexico. I thought the big shell earrings played up the polka dot theme, with their cutout center. All that with my fav white watch (which is going to need replaced soon) and my black bag from my Lust Have Haul last year.
I really want to know what you think! Would you wear this look? Or do you have a suggestion on how to wear pink polka dots if you aren’t a little girl?

Hello PPDM (pink polka dot Moneypenny),

Yehhhhh. You finally made it !… Auntie Anne had told you your curls would look great with a scarf as a headband. See… they really do!
Your combination of mini polka dot dress + black leggins is terrific. To my opinion, nothing age inappropriate in this outfit. The acessories give it a womanly look. Also this dress design evokes more the 1970′s designs than something childish. No risk the teacher sends you to 4th grade
I have a pink silk chiffon scarf with black polka dots which I wear regularly. It has become one of my basics…

Anne Touraine (Playing with Scarves)
And, of course, many thanks for the link to my blog!

I am a good listener Anne!
You said it would look good so I tried it…after all, you are the Queen of all things Scarf related!
I’m glad I did to because the headband look worked really well with this look.
Definitely going to give it another go soon.
Thanks for sharing all your scarf knowledge with your humble student.
Cheers,
Laura

I’m a sucker for polka dots and you make them look very, very chic!

Thanks Alicia!
I was a little worried they may be too young for me.
There are polka dots in my wardrobe but more in neutral shades so the pink was a bit of a leap for me.

Love it, truly. First, let me also say that I really love your solarium/outdoor space where you take these photos. It looks lovely! Second, I LOVE the dress. Because I am a hoyden extraordinaire, I might try it without pants (on v. hot days of course) but the black pants are chic as heck. And paired with those shoes? YES. xx

Thanks Misses!
That is our patio, we have an old remodeled victorian miners cottage and I love that space too.
Great for sitting on and having a glass of wine.
You have much better legs so would look fantastic in this look without the tights.
I could so imagine you rocking it!

Laura

I too love polka dots, I was just worried about a “woman of my age” wearing pink polka dots!
All the other polka dot items I have are more subtle or neutrals.

Love the look! It is so satisfying to find an item at thrift shop and make it into something unexpected. You look great.

Thanks Larkin!
I love making op shop stuff work in my wardrobe! Then I don’t feel so guilty about the designer stuff.
I’m not fond of my arms or knees but after nearly 50 years of them being attached I have decided I would rather have them than not!!

I’m new to polka dots myself. So far I’ve gone a tame route with two J. Crew pieces — silk and chambray — but I love your look above! I just bought hot pink wedges similar to yours. Great post!
February 8th, 2013 at 10:32
Thanks Jamie!
I started with a few neutral polka dot pieces but something about this one just screamed fun!

So cute! I could never get away with that, but you wear it so beautifully.

I felt a little self concious about it Alys but with all the compliments I soon got over it!

You have an innate fashion sense. You look great in every single thing you put together. I think half of good fashion sense comes from the confidence to pull something together and wear it well. You do that in spades.
February 11th, 2013 at 19:07
Thank You Alys!
After awhile you learn what works for you and your body type.
I usually, work with what I know and find a different way to spin it.
Plus, I really do love fashion and what a sense of style can say about a person.
I flex back and forth between being a big picture person and a detail person so I use both sides of my thinking when organizing an outfit.
Cheers,
Laura

Nice! You’ve really thought it through.
I don’t get much chance to put my fashion sense forward. When I’m organizing, I’m often down on the floor of a garage or home office, lifting boxes, moving furniture, etc. I can’t wear any hanging jewelry (necklace or bracelets) and I need to wear safe, non-skid, comfortable shoes. I’m often wearing jeans and a tshirt.
I do dress up when I have date night with hubby.
February 13th, 2013 at 15:43
That’s good!
At least it is an opportunity for both of you to enjoy an amazing you! But then you are pretty amazing in jeans and a t-shirt too.
February 15th, 2013 at 12:10
That was a lovely thing to say.
