The 31st of January is Inspire Your Heart with Art Day, which I find appropriate for so many reasons. First of all we are only two weeks from Valentine’s Day which is all about heart’s and love. Secondly, because we are a month into the new year and I wonder how everyone is doing on their New Year’s Resolutions.
However, the more I think about what is art, the more my mind wanders off to less conventional inspiration. Don’t get me wrong, I love art in the traditional sense…painting and sculpture but I also find inspiration in photography, architecture and fabulous clothes. Which is why you will have read posts from me comparing Gaudi buildings in Madrid to clothing, and seen a recent post on the sculptures at the local botanical gardens. I even think amazing food can be a work of art.
art - noun
- The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture,…: “the art of the Renaissance”
- Works produced by such skill and imagination.
craft – skill – artifice – science – workmanship – knack
So really, based on that definition art truly can come in many forms. I was reviewing some photos I had taken when I was in Melbourne for the Spring Fashion Festival in September. Although I took many fashion related photos I had also taken some other “inspirational” or as the Fashion Mister calls them “arty-farty” photos. All of these do inspire my heart.
A little nod to Picasso but what girl can resist bling? Even if it is a mirror covered elephant statue!

Graffiti on Hosier Lane Melbourne
Not only is one of my favourite restaurants on Hosier Lane (Movida and Movida Next Door) but I love the ever-changing graffiti-ed walls in the lane. I’m constantly inspired by the colour and desperately want to do a photo shoot there. The place is often packed with tourists and wedding parties. Some day I will get my nerve up to have the Fashion Mister take some photos of one of my styled looks there.
Gothic, Victorian and Deco buildings are some of my favourites but a beautifully designed building from any period can be amazing.
There are three of these whistling gentlemen on their way to work. I like the sense of whimsy about them and that they are passed by hundreds of thousands of people. Some who barely look at them and others who reach out and touch them as they walk past. I personally find them very tactile.
Amazing fashion housed inside amazing architecture! Another reason to love Melbourne.
There were great big displays of origami flowers inside the GPO on this day. I was impressed both by the vision and the patience of the creator.
Also inside the GPO Melbourne is the Alpha 60 shop. As I wandered through I was stopped in my tracks by the impact this photo made hanging up on the wall. I love black and white photography and the contrast in this photo was so strong I felt moved to photograph the photo!
I’m glad that art comes in many forms and am thankful that there are those creative enough to make art in all it’s forms to inspire me.
What inspires your heart? When it comes to art are you a traditionalist or a bit open to all forms?

Well I can easily say the I’ve completely bungled up my resolutions. Next year I think I’ll resolve to bungle them up. Set yourself up for success – that’s what I say! Anyway, with regard to art, I used to be a traditionalist, but then I took and art history class in college and my eyes were opened. Thanks for sharing the inspiration.

I think there is so much more to art than the traditional.
Not that there is anything wrong with the traditional, because I like that too!
As for New Years resolutions, I have stopped making them.

Thanks for sharing these cool pics-love the origami. I’m open to most art mediums. It’s interesting to see art through other people’s eyes.

My pleasure to be able to share.
I hadn’t really thought much about any of those photos actually being art until I started thinking about this post.
Then I started thinking that I thought it was interesting enough to photograph because for some reason it inspired me…
so perhaps the simple fact that it inspired me meant it was art.

He is rather cool isn’t he?!
I like to go past him and his two friends when I am in Melbourne.
But that is because they are near the shopping part of the city!

I’ve stuck to my resolutions like glue so far
What a great post! As an artist myself I see it in many items and places most would overlook. Art is whatever you deem it to be. It can be a crack in the sidewalk or the cathedral it leads to.

Well said Alicia!

My favorite art is the stuff my dudes produce. The comics they draw. The paintings the splash. The stickered pages in their journals. Filled with their favorite colors and ideas.
I also enjoy black and white photos like Ansel Adams work. And pictures of landscapes leave me feeling tranquil and right with the world.
Love the origami flower picture. So fun. Thanks for sharing them.

I love children’s art too!
It’s fun to see the world through their eyes.
And I have loved watching the grand-daughters art change as she grows.

They are pretty cool aren’t they!
I cant imagine who had the patience to actually fold them all because the installation was quite large.

It is a gorgeous shop!
With fantastic clothes. It actually has a fairly classic interior with most things in white which make the bits done in black stand out even more.

I’m doing well with new years resolution. The main two (take more holidays and eat more ethical meat) have been great fun. How are yours going?

Mine are going well because I don’t make any!
I find it too hard to start the year that way. So I’ll wait another month or so before making some changes.
