It’s now time for Floral Fling part II!
Last week it was about the fashion, this week it is just about the flowers. You may remember that I had a couple of hours to kill so opted for some sunshine and a walk around the local botanical gardens last week. Well it’s full on mid-summer so there aren’t lot’s of bright flowers out right now but I still managed to get a couple of nice shots that will qualify for floral fling.
Butterfly Attraction
Red Hot Pokers
There were hundreds of butterflies flitting about these purple blooms. It was quite pretty to watch them land for a moment and then launch themselves to the next flower. These hot orange flowers are merely a reflection of the intensity of the sun!
Succulent Success
(not so) Delicate Flowers
Floral Fireworks
With the weather so hot it only makes sense that the succulents are having their time to shine in the gardens. I love all the varieties and colours. They can be very delicate looking for a plant that is so hardy. These little orange burst s of colour are like mini fireworks.
The great Australian Gum Tree
I’m not sure what it is about gum tree‘s that fascinate me so. I’m very fond of the way they smell after a rain, twisted their branches are and how there leaves are all bunched up at the end of the branches like pom-poms in a cheerleaders hand. When I first moved to Australia, I used to stare out at the horizon watching the sun set behind a grove of gums and feel so at ease.

Those are actually just succulents but I love that they look like flowers. Because Australia had been in a drought when I moved here, I planted a bunch of them in my gardens. They don’t look quite as lovely but they are a great way to get the floral effect without the fuss.

yes, those purple buddlia are wonderful for attracting butterflies… I have them in my garden for that reason…

Hi There!
Thank you, the Botanical Gardens here are quite lovely for a small regional town/city.
A Gum Tree (or what is called a gum tree in Australia is a Eucalyptus.) There are hundreds of varieties and a few are the type that Koala eat.
They tend to smell a little like an anticeptic after the rain but in a good way, not too strong just fresh.
There are a couple places in California where I have seen them, but usually it is because I have smelled them first. One is a large grove outside of San Francisco and the other is on the same hill as the Coit Tower in San Francisco.
Gum Trees, Cockatoos, Cookaburras, kangaroos and wombats are all things that when I see I am reminded that I am living in a different country. Gum trees and cockatoos are everywhere so it’s a pretty constant reminder.
