We shall finish this week of looking at my Lust Have list with the once again classic Denim Jacket!
Naturally, I wore one in the late 80s, early 90s. Didn’t everyone? It was a Guess denim jacket. And I wore it until it nearly fell apart. Which happened to be about the same time that they seemed to go out of fashion for most. But they are back and as my biker chic side emerges I am lusting to own one again. Plus, do you see too many photos of casual street style where some lovely thing isn’t wearing one? Even if it is over a designer maxi skirt and sequined tank? I think that makes it a must have lust have item!
This denim jacket from True Religion looks just about the state my old Guess was in when it finally wore out. You can purchase it brand new from ShopBop.com for a meer $360! WOW! Seriously? Who does that? I mean, I get that there are some people who can afford to do it, and those who will do it because of the brand…but really? It’s just a denim jacket. And this one is nearly worn out! I’m sure I can do better on my not so extravagant budget.
So here we have a a denim jacket in a slightly better condition but still with a bit of aged look to it by Rag and Bone found at Net-a-Porter. What do you think? More expensive or less?
Actually, it’s more! Just under $400 Australian ($170 sterling). Nice jacket. Love the colour. Think the amount of aging is just about right. Just can’t come at the price.
Surely there is something less expensive out there? Don’t tell me that the humble denim jacket is going to blow my budget?!
How about this classic Levi’s Denim Jacket? Higher or lower? (didn’t know we were playing the ‘Price is Right’ did you?) Good colour. Little bit of the washed and worn look. Cute cropped style. Any thoughts? Let me help, it’s listed at ASOS. That’s right! The classic, king of denim and creator of the jean look for the masses, Levi’s denim jacket is less than the designer brands at only $160. Can’t believe I just typed “only $160″ when talking about a denim jacket! This may be one lust have that just doesn’t make the cut.
I have to keep looking! Don’t give up!
At last! We’ve made it under $100! Cute cropped style = check. A little wear to the colour = check. Good price = check. This little lovely is from The Iconic and has now become a contender! No, it’s not got a designer label or the history of the Levi brand but I don’t really care and most of the people who will see me wearing it aren’t going to care either.
But wait…can I do better?
Here’s another offering from ASOS. It’s there Western Denim Jacket. Cropped – yes, colour – perfect, price – excellent! It’s just under $65! Have a good look. Compare it to the $400 jacket from Net-a-Porter. Can you see a $335 difference? I can’t.
But I can see myself being able to afford a few other things on my list if I spend less than $100 on a this item.
Now, just for the fun of it.
I had a look at Etsy.com. I entered Guess Denim Jacket in the vintage section. There were a few. All reasonably priced. Now really, other than the Levi option, you can’t get much more authentic. The style is classic cropped. The colour is forced to look worn and faded, it has achieved it’s natural patina over the years of being worn! What a novel idea! Best part, the price is $40! Even with $15 shipping to get it to Australia, it’s the biggest bargain.
No, it won’t make me feel like I’m twenty again but I can at least feel good about the fact that I am not naive enough to spend a massive chunk of my $1000 budget lusting after an insanely expensive denim jacket!
Lust Have to Must Have and I am sure I will be getting myself a Denim Jacket this season!
Would you go vintage or designer? What persuades you to make the choice?

Paula,
I just keep thinking that I should stop getting rid of clothes unless they are falling apart because everything I thought I would never see again is back in fashion! I could have an amazing wardrobe of “vintage”.
Cheers,

I have a cute faded, more fitted demin jacket but my fav. is one I stole from my dad ! It’s ‘oversized” obviously but comfy & still cute with some outfits

I’m so jealous Jane!
I bet the one from your dad is a little like getting a hug.
vintage is always better when there is a good and meaningful story to go with it.
Hopefully you are pairing it with flowy skirts for spring and summer as that is quite a fresh “non-frumpy” look right now!
Cheers,
Laura

I only have ONE denim jacket and its the engineered cut of Levi’s a decade ago.
It costed $150+… wish Levi’s bring back their engineered cut series… it was good and really OOAK.
Hope you find your true love denim jacket

Thanks Jeannie!
Me too! I can’t believe I have spent nearly 20 years without one?!
That is complete madness!
Tomorrow is my 90 days up so I plan to remedy that very soon.

I love how denim jackets look (really – I love them) and I have one … I just almost never wear it. Maybe I need to throw it into an empty concrete truck with some rocks & bricks to soften it up … (now who wants to ruin their concrete truck for me, hmm?)
June 5th, 2012 at 08:19
LOL! If I had a concrete truck, I would ruin it for you and fashion!
It would be well worth it.
I keep seeing denim jackets on all the street fashion looks and started wondering why I didn’t have one?
Imagine, I’ve got the black leather bomber/varsity jacket but not a denim one?
Seems mad.
You are going to have to find a way to work that denim jacket of yours into your look more.
Maybe we all should do a denim jacket challenge…7 looks in 7 days? That could be inspiring!
Cheers,
Laura

You’ll have to let me know when you want to do the denim dash so I can face-off appropriately and document it in photos here on the blog!

I’d love to get my hands on a classic Levi or Gap denim jacket. I had one from Express years ago and loved it. great post, love! xoGlor

Glor,
Have a look at Etsy.com there are usually quite a few Levi denim jackets at very reasonable prices listed there.
I’m pretty sure I have seen a couple of Gap ones as well.

A denim jacket is a classic must. You know it’s the one for you when you put it on and don’t want to take it off.

Resa,
After 90 days of no shopping I probably will be that way with anything new I put on!

It’s so beautiful! The first denim jacket photo you have. It’s so quirky and fun looking due to the colors of the buttons being different
And denim jacket’s are perfect for those days you want to look fab but are too lazy to dress up xD Well, at least in my case
June 6th, 2012 at 21:38
I have to agree, I like the different colour buttons of the first jacket.
It definitely plays up the fun side.
I think a denim jacket can be a great classic piece and the beauty of the classics is that they are asy to wear, look good no matter what you are wearing them with, and they make you feel fabulous without a lot of effort!
Cheers,
Laura
